Tusk Thai Restaurant and Bar
The client came to us with an open brief to design lighting, signage, and various features for their space. We presented several concepts, and once a direction was chosen, we developed it further.
The project included designing and manufacturing of all lighting, wall features and artworks, that contributed to the overall theme.
Additionally, we designed external street signage, including street-level and high level high-visibility signage. For the high-level, large-scale signage, we created a striking, handcrafted Iconic Street sign. The concept emphasized unique texture and craftsmanship, with features like heat-tempered coloring, rustic joints, and exposed stainless steel. A combination of low tech crafts such as stitching together, and folding, along with high tech material such as stainless steel and plenty of textural visual effects.
The design of the signage was inspired by the whimsical idea of a crashed other worldly UFO, positioned high above the streetscape.
This one-of-a-kind piece has stood the test of time and weather, and has served as a landmark beacon on the well known Dominion road for the this popular restaurant for nearly 2 decades.
For this project, we developed unique, sculptural forms from flat sheet metal, creating two dome shapes through a process of scorching, texturing, and patching. The forms were welded together to create an eye-catching structure.
The font was designed with a highly reflective finish, contrasting with the textured backdrop of the domes, ensuring it would stand out, especially when illuminated at night.
To support the large metal structure, we implemented strong bracing to cantilever it from the building.
The finished piece, with its striking textures and bold design, is visible from a great distance, drawing attention due to its unique handcrafted form.
This internal wall feature was crafted on-site using specially selected timber, which was scorched and branded with an iconic logo. The branding was burned into the timber, allowing the design to create a warm light that reflected into the dining space.
The lighting was designed with a focus on reflection, creating a soft, ambient glow with no direct light exposure.
This bespoke feature was visible from the street at the rear of the restaurant, adding to the branding and offering visibility both from outside and within the building.

We designed and created various reflected and translucent wall features to light the dining and bar space by default, instead of relying on direct lighting. This created a soft, evening-like atmosphere with a lot of textural interest. The lighting design helped define different areas in the space subtly, without the need for harsh or intrusive lighting, giving everything a more calming and inviting feel.
